Reno to Tahoe

I am looking for a ski weekend next weekend and saw that hotels are much less expensive in reno. How long of a drive is it from reno to the slopes?

Reno to Tahoe

Mt. Rose is the closest at about 45 minutes. Squaw is between 60 and 75 minutes. Heavenly is no more than 90 minutes. Alpine Meadows, add 15 minutes to Squaw.

With the slopes opening at 9:00, leaving at 7:30 will get you to all in NLT plus Heavenly by opening time.

Hotel rates in SLT for week-ends are out of sight, as you already know. This is why Reno stays on the radar screen.

Reno to Tahoe

Diamond Peak in Incline Village has ski/stay packages with some good rates.

beware. diamond peak is the absolute worst ski area i%26#39;ve ever been to. anywhere.

lelandpalmer, how about you make recommendations instead of just critisizing the recommendations made by others? Would that just be too hard for you?

Squaw Valley has a free shuttle from hotels in Reno. Here%26#39;s a link:

So even if you are not happy to drive in winter conditions you can get to the slopes.

well, thanks for asking, suzie. i’m always glad to help out, so I’ll try.

you, yourself mentioned squaw which is, of course, a fine choice. as is alpine meadows. i’m also kind of partial to sugar bowl, although it doesn’t seem to be mentioned much anymore, at least not by any of you “experts”. to the south, heavenly’s only about an hour away. and kirkwood is good, but that’s a little too long of a drive, even though you can stop for a leisurely breakfast at zephyr cove, you%26#39;ll be bone tired on the way back. for sheer convenience you just can’t beat mt. rose. a pleasant diversion for a day’s skiing with varied terrain.

i trust that canative didn’t feel “critisized”. he didn’t recommend diamond peak, just pointed out that some cheap deals were available there. and while i don’t know where our visitor was coming from, i do know that if I came from anywhere (other than perhaps incline) i would be very disappointed if i ended up at diamond peak.

On the contrary, I love Sugar Bowl. I recommend it whenever it seems appropriate and logical. From Reno, Sugar Bowl seems far enough away that they may be better off going to a nice resort like Squaw. Don%26#39;t get what the quotes around the word ';expert'; is for though. But whatever.

dont worry suzie you are more then a expert on the tahoe area and i know many of us appreciate your input

Thanks.

I happen to think that the more opinions here on TA the better. It%26#39;s not necessary to agree either. To put your opinion out there you don%26#39;t have to put down anothere person%26#39;s opinion. Just state you have a different oipinion and why. The reason there is chocolate and vanilla is because not everyone likes the same thing. If ski resorts are so bad why would so many people enjoy them? Because they have something to offer that some people like. All ski resorts are different and appeal to different people. That seems about right doesn%26#39;t it?

WOW! Thank you all for all your great insight. I%26#39;ve made plans to visit Jackson Hole. (it was much less expensive and only a few miles from the airport to the slopes)

When I get some extra cash I%26#39;ll be jetting to Lake Tahoe.

It looks like the most beautiful place.

THanks again. You all are great!
