Vegas to GCNP on february

We are planning a trip to Vegas next february (It will be our first time and maybe the only one becasue we live in Argentina)we have a couple of questions for you, we want to go to grand canyon, Hows the route? I read it normally takes 5 hours to get there so maybe its a good idea to stay in a Hotel in Williams to spend the night or there is another option?

I saw that maybe we can find some snow, is it true? We also want to go to Death Valley, How much time it takes to take a good look and coming back to Vegas? Many Thanks for your help

If you can stay the nite in a hotel so you have at least an entire day at the Grand Canyon that would be best. You might have some snow in February. We were there in March a couple of years ago and it snowed a little. Yes, the drive takes about 5 hours, but only about 4 hours to Williams.

Death Valley is about 2 hours from Las Vegas so you could make that in a day trip.

Thanks a lot for your help Ivziggy surely we will do that, then the next question will be: where? you recommend something very near the Grand Canyon Lodge, Williams (I saw a hotel Rodeway Inn Suites) or Tusayan or it doesn t matter? Thanks.

Hi Fernando - if you possibly can, try to reserve a hotel either inside Grand Canyon National Park (there are 6) or Tusayan, which is a small town located just outside the park gates (there are 5 hotels there). Williams is OK, but it is located 1 hour South of the park, so after you were done sightseeing, you%26#39;d be facing a bit of a drive to get to your hotel.

In park lodging is managed by the concessionaire, Xanterra South Rim. They can be reached by phone at 303-297-2757 or try www.grandcanyonlodges.com What with February being ';off-season,'; you might be able to find some special rates at either the in-park lodges or in Tusayan. Otherwise, the prices in Williams are usually very reasonable.

Yes, it is very possible that you might encounter snow, so do monitor the weather 2 weeks or so before you come to the states. Using your favorite weather website, Grand Canyon%26#39;s locator code is ';GCN.'; Snow or no snow, it will most likely be cold, so be prepared to bring your coats, gloves, etc.

Thanks a lot for your help, I just visited on internet the xanterra website and fortunatelly for us, there is a special rate in winter at Maswik or Yavapai Lodges booking in advance so we will probably take one of these options, do you know them? one more question, how much does it normally snow? Shall we need to use chains in our cars or it isn t necessary? We are going on february 13.

Thanks a lot.

We went from Vegas to the GCNP in February 2008. We stayed overnight at the Maswik Lodge. They had 13 inches of snow the day before we got there. The trip there was fine with the rental car, inside the park only the main roads were plowed. We were unable to get to some of the viewing areas because of this. The Lodge rooms we had were nice and remodeled. It would not be a trip I would want to try and do without spending the night. Bring a warm coat with you, it was very cold when we were there.

We also made a trip to Death Valley, but we did this in a day trip. We started out very early in the morning and didn%26#39;t come back to Vegas until the evening. I am sure there is a lot we didn%26#39;t see, but what we did see was beautiful.

Good luck with your plans. I hope you have a wonderful trip. Please write a trip report and let us know all about it.

Good decision to stay inside the park. You%26#39;ll be so glad that you%26#39;re there. As for snow, it%26#39;s impossible to predict. But what you should know is that the roads get cleared very quickly after a storm, so the best strategy is to not drive when it%26#39;s snowing. You can get a forecast for weather in LV before you leave. If there is a storm in the making, know that it will move through in a few hours. So if you happen to be on the road and it starts to snow, get off the road, and find a place to wait while the storm passes. Once it ends you can resume your trip. You won%26#39;t need chains. Just don%26#39;t be driving in a blizzard. If you do, even chains won%26#39;t help. And getting stranded or into an accident during a blizzard is the dangerous part. Just use common sense, and get off the road when it starts to snow.

Thanks a lot for your help, I just booked inside the park as you advise me, MUCHAS GRACIAS

I just came back today from our holidays and really want to thanks for your advice. We had a very cold but sunny day and we enjoyed a lot. The Maskwik was OK for us and also the food NO COMPLAINS AT ALL.

Thanks again for your help and if any of you need any kind of information about my country please let me know
